On the eve of the highly anticipated tripartite meeting in Washington between Presidents Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi, Paul Kagame and Donald Trump, several essential elements of the upcoming peace agreement have been revealed.
The accord, seen as a major step toward lasting stability in the Great Lakes region, is expected to revolve around three fundamental pillars aimed at ending decades of insecurity in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
1. Respect for Territorial Integrity
The first pillar of the agreement reaffirms the fundamental principle of the territorial integrity of the DRC. This point, crucial for Kinshasa, aims to ensure that Congo’s borders are fully recognized and respected. It also includes a clear commitment against any form of interference—direct or indirect—that could undermine the country’s sovereignty.
This mutual pledge is expected to serve as a foundation for gradually normalizing diplomatic relations between the two nations.
2. Cessation of Hostilities
The second point centers on the immediate cessation of hostilities in conflict-affected areas, particularly in North Kivu and South Kivu. All parties are expected to commit to ending military offensives, halting bombardments, and allowing unhindered humanitarian access to affected populations.
A monitoring mechanismwith participation from the United States is being considered to ensure compliance with the ceasefire and prevent renewed escalation.
3. Disengagement of Non-State Armed Groups
The third pillar concerns the disengagement and withdrawal of non-state armed groups, whose operations continue to fuel instability in eastern DRC.
The agreement is expected to include:
-
the neutralization of the most active groups,
-
progressive disarmament,
-
repatriation or reintegration of combatants,
-
and strengthened regional cooperation to prevent regrouping or rearmament.
This component is among the most sensitive, as it requires deep coordination between both countries and the support of international partners.
A Strongly Anticipated Deal for the People of Eastern DRC
As clashes continue in several areas of North and South Kivu, the populations of Goma, Rutshuru, Masisi, Nyiragongo, Bukavu and many other affected communities are hoping this agreement will mark the beginning of real and lasting peace.
Washington thus positions itself as a key mediator in fostering dialogue and consolidating peace in the region.
The agreement, expected to be signed in the coming hours, represents both hope and a significant test of political will for all parties involved.
