On the fourth anniversary of the war in Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and top European Union leaders delivered strong messages of solidarity, resilience, and continued support for Ukraine, as the conflict with Russia shows no sign of ending.

Speaking on the anniversary, President Zelenskiy paid tribute to the thousands of civilians and soldiers who have lost their lives since the start of the full-scale invasion in February 2022. He emphasized Ukraine’s determination to defend its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and democratic future, despite ongoing military pressure and humanitarian challenges.

“Four years later, Ukraine is still standing, still fighting, and still defending the values of freedom and international law,” Zelenskiy said in his address.

EU Leaders Reaffirm Political and Military Support

European leaders echoed Zelenskiy’s message, reaffirming the EU’s long-term political, financial, and military backing for Ukraine. In joint statements, EU officials stressed that support for Kyiv remains unwavering, highlighting sanctions against Russia, military assistance, and humanitarian aid as key pillars of the bloc’s strategy.

Several leaders underlined that the war is not only about Ukraine, but about the future of European security and the defense of international norms.

A War With Global Consequences

Four years into the conflict, the war in Ukraine continues to have far-reaching global impacts, including:

  • Ongoing humanitarian crises and displacement of millions of Ukrainians

  • Disruptions to global food and energy markets

  • Heightened geopolitical tensions between Russia and Western allies

Despite these challenges, EU leaders reiterated their commitment to ensuring that Ukraine is not forced into a peace that compromises its independence.

Looking Ahead

As the war enters its fifth year, President Zelenskiy called on allies to maintain unity and accelerate support, warning that fatigue could embolden aggression. EU leaders, in turn, emphasized that Ukraine’s struggle is inseparable from Europe’s own security and stability.

The fourth anniversary serves as a stark reminder that the conflict remains one of the most consequential wars in modern European history, with its outcome likely to shape global geopolitics for decades to come.
