South Kivu: Heavy clashes erupt in North Kabare and Kaziba between FARDC and AFC/M23, paralyzing Mudaka, despite ongoing peace talks in Washington. Humanitarian concerns rise.

A sharp deterioration in the security situation was reported this Thursday, December 4, 2025, in several areas of South Kivu, where intense fighting has resumed between the Congolese army (FARDC) and AFC/M23 rebels.

Local sources confirm renewed clashes in the Kaziba chiefdom in Walungu territory, while major incidents have also been recorded in Mudaka, North Kabare.

Wazalendo Fighters Deploy to Mudaka: Panic and Total Paralysis

Early in the morning, Wazalendo fighters were seen arriving in Mudaka, a large center located about 20 km north of Bukavu. Their presence triggered heavy gunfire across the area, plunging residents into a state of widespread panic.

All socio-economic activities have been brought to a standstill. Shops, markets, schools, and transport services have shut down as inhabitants locked themselves inside their homes, fearing an escalation of violence.

AFC/M23 Reinforcements Reported Coming from Bukavu

According to initial reports, a reinforcement of AFC/M23 fighters was spotted heading toward Kabare from Bukavu. The news has heightened fear among communities already traumatized by recurring violence in the region.

The FARDC has reportedly strengthened its strategic positions to prevent any further rebel advance.

Fighting Resumes in Kaziba (Walungu Territory)

At the same time, witnesses in the Kaziba chiefdom report heavy weapons fire as FARDC troops engage in fierce clashes with AFC/M23 combatants. The situation, already tense in recent days, deteriorated rapidly at daybreak.

Residents of several surrounding villages have begun fleeing toward safer areas. Local authorities warn of a potential humanitarian crisis if the fighting continues.

A Paradoxical Context: Fighting on the Ground Amid Peace Talks in Washington

These violent confrontations come as peace negotiations are reportedly underway in Washington between delegations from the DRC, Rwanda, and international partners. The intensification of fighting on the ground sharply contrasts with these diplomatic efforts, raising questions about the parties’ true commitment to honoring any forthcoming agreement.

Fear and Uncertainty Among the Population

In Kabare, Walungu, and around Bukavu, fear dominates daily life. Residents are calling on the government to reinforce security measures and secure concrete guarantees within the ongoing peace process. Several local organizations are warning of the risk of a major humanitarian crisis if the situation is not contained quickly.
