Violence erupts in Gulu during Bobi’s 2026 campaign rally as gangs clash with security forces, causing panic and disruptions.

The 2026 electoral season in Uganda took a dramatic turn on Monday as chaos swept through the city of Gulu during a major campaign rally held by opposition leader Bobi Wine. What was expected to be a peaceful gathering quickly spiraled into violence as gangs clashed with security forces, creating widespread panic among residents.

Violent Clashes Break Out During the Rally

According to local witnesses, tensions escalated shortly after Bobi Wine’s convoy entered central Gulu.
Groups of armed youth, identified by residents as local gangs aligned with rival political interests, began provoking crowds and blocking key roads.

Security forces responded with tear gas and rubber bullets as riots intensified. Several streets in Pece, Layibi, and Bardege divisions were temporarily taken over by violent groups, leading to:

  • Looting of nearby shops

  • Burning of tyres and road barricades

  • Attacks on campaign vehicles

  • Injuries among civilians caught in the chaos

Ambulances rushed multiple victims to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital as the unrest continued for hours.

Bobi Wine Accuses Authorities of Fueling the Violence

Speaking after being escorted out of the city by his security team, Bobi Wine condemned the violence, accusing authorities of “deliberately allowing gangs to destabilize opposition events.”

“This chaos is not accidental. It is a pattern we’ve seen throughout this campaign,” he declared in a statement.
“Ugandans deserve a peaceful and fair election, not intimidation.”

His campaign team reported damage to several vehicles and equipment.

Authorities Blame “Criminal Elements”

In contrast, security officials described the events as the work of “criminal elements seeking to disrupt public order.”

The police spokesperson stated that:

  • Several suspects had been arrested

  • Additional patrols were deployed across Gulu

  • A full investigation was underway

Authorities denied any political motive in their response.

Residents in Fear as Violence Spreads

For many residents, the incident revived memories of previous election-related tensions in northern Uganda.
Shops remained closed throughout the day, and many families stayed indoors.

Local traders expressed frustration, noting that campaign unrest continues to affect business and community stability.

A Troubling Sign for the 2026 Election Climate

The violence in Gulu adds to growing concerns about Uganda’s 2026 election environment, marked by rising tensions between supporters of the ruling party and opposition movements.

Human rights observers warn that escalating clashes could undermine:

  • Voter turnout

  • Freedom of assembly

  • General safety during the electoral period

The Gulu chaos highlights the fragile security situation surrounding Bobi Wine’s 2026 campaign trail. As investigations continue, both authorities and opposition leaders face mounting pressure to prevent further violence and ensure that Uganda moves toward a peaceful electoral process.
