DRC and Rwanda Border Temporarily Closed, Travelers Stranded

Border posts between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda have been temporarily closed since the morning of Sunday, May 17, 2026.

In Goma, the two main crossing points connecting the Congolese city to Gisenyi in Rwanda  the Grande Barrière, also known as “La Corniche,” and the Petite Barrière  are affected by the closure.

At the Grande Barrière located in downtown Goma, in the Volcan neighborhood, the measure is being strictly enforced. Several Congolese travelers heading to Rwanda, Kampala in Uganda, and the cities of Beni, Butembo, and Bunia found themselves stranded with their luggage and goods.

According to observations on the ground, only Rwandan nationals are currently allowed to cross into Rwanda. Meanwhile, Congolese citizens on the Rwandan side are permitted to enter the DRC but are not allowed to return to Rwanda.

The temporary closure has raised concerns among traders and travelers who rely heavily on daily cross-border movement between Goma and Gisenyi.

Authorities have not yet officially communicated the reasons behind the decision or indicated when the border crossings will reopen.
