UN: Guterres Calls for Unity and Peace in Final General Assembly Address
As world leaders gather in New York for the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, UN Secretary-General António Guterres has renewed his call for unity, peace and stronger multilateral cooperation.
The session coincides with the International Day of Peace on September 21, taking place against the backdrop of ongoing wars, humanitarian crises and growing geopolitical divisions around the world.
In what marks his final address to the General Assembly as UN Secretary-General, Guterres stressed the importance of investing in peace through everyday actions, going beyond diplomatic efforts by governments. He praised volunteers, peace advocates and local communities working to bridge divides and promote dialogue.
Communities at the Heart of Peacebuilding
Guterres emphasized that peace is not simply the absence of war. It is also built through daily efforts by ordinary people, civil society organizations and local communities.
He highlighted initiatives that help bring people together and build bridges between divided communities, particularly in areas affected by prolonged conflicts.
The UN chief also paid tribute to peacekeepers and local changemakers who continue working on the ground to protect civilians, encourage dialogue and support peacebuilding efforts.
European Leaders Back UN Reform
Several European leaders have reaffirmed their support for the United Nations and reforms aimed at strengthening the effectiveness of the multilateral system.
The discussions come as countries seek to improve international cooperation and ensure that the UN is better equipped to respond to emerging global crises.
Indian leaders and public figures have also emphasized the importance of harmony, non-violence and dialogue as essential tools for resolving international disputes.
Sustainable Development and Multilateral Action
The 81st UN General Assembly is also expected to focus on major global challenges, including sustainable development, international cooperation and stronger multilateral action.
With conflicts continuing to affect millions of people worldwide, the United Nations is seeking to place peace, dialogue and cooperation at the center of the international agenda.
Guterres’ appeal comes at a critical moment for multilateralism. Amid growing geopolitical tensions and divisions, the UN continues to argue that dialogue, solidarity and international cooperation remain essential to building lasting peace.
