Tunisian opposition veteran Ahmed Néjib Chebbi was arrested on Thursday, December 4, at his home, just days after he was handed a 12-year prison sentence on appeal for conspiracy against state security.

The news was confirmed by his daughter and one of his lawyers, sparking widespread concern within Tunisia’s political class and among international observers.

A Major Figure of the Opposition

At over 80 years old, Ahmed Néjib Chebbi is one of the most prominent and longstanding figures in Tunisian politics. Cofounder and president of the National Salvation Front (FSN)—the main opposition coalition—he is widely respected for his decades-long struggle in favor of democracy, human rights, and political pluralism in Tunisia.

His arrest marks a new turning point in the country’s political climate, with critics denouncing an escalating crackdown on dissenting voices in recent months.

A Series of Convictions in the Same Case

The case involving Chebbi has already led to the arrest and sentencing of several other well-known Tunisian opposition figures. Among them:

  • Ayachi Hammami, a prominent lawyer, sentenced to 5 years in prison;

  • Chaïma Issa, an activist and influential figure within the protest movement, sentenced to 20 years in prison.

These convictions also tied to accusations of conspiracy against state security have triggered strong reactions from NGOs, political parties, and international observers.

A Growing Political Tension

Since 2021, Tunisia has been facing a deep institutional crisis marked by the dissolution of Parliament, the expansion of presidential powers, the arrest of political opponents, and increasing restrictions on public freedoms.
The arrest of Ahmed Néjib Chebbi fits into this wider trend and is likely to further intensify political tensions within the country as well as concerns among Tunisia’s international partners.

Calls for Release and Respect for Rights

Numerous voices are already condemning the government’s hardening stance and calling for the immediate release of Chebbi and other political detainees. Human rights organizations point out that trials related to “conspiracy” charges often face criticism for lack of transparency and judicial independence.
