Angola’s Initiative Amid the DRC Crisis
The meeting was held at the initiative of President João Lourenço, who remains a key regional mediator in efforts to restore peace in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Discussions focused on assessing the worsening security situation in eastern DRC, where persistent violence continues to destabilize the region.
Eastern DRC at the Center of Discussions
Talks highlighted the ongoing clashes involving the AFC/M23 rebel group, as well as the severe humanitarian consequences of the conflict.
Millions of civilians have been affected by forced displacement, insecurity, and limited access to essential services such as healthcare, education, and humanitarian aid.
Role of Religious Leaders in Peace Efforts
CENCO and the ECC, both highly influential religious institutions in the DRC, reiterated their commitment to promoting a peaceful, inclusive, and dialogue-based solution to the crisis. They emphasized the need for the protection of civilians, national cohesion, and stronger engagement from regional and international partners.
Toward Strengthened Regional Diplomacy
This high-level meeting in Luanda forms part of broader regional diplomatic efforts led by Angola to stabilize the Great Lakes region. It underscores the growing recognition of religious leaders as key actors in conflict resolution and peacebuilding in the DRC.
